Working after Retirement

You cannot work in a Michigan Public School or for the State of Michigan during the month of your retirement effective date, even as a volunteer. Following the month of your retirement, retirees with State of Michigan 401(k) and 457 Plan accounts are subject to federal and state rules regarding withdrawals and distributions from those accounts. Upon return to work at a Michigan Public School Employees’ Retirement System (MPSERS) employer, retirees cannot continue distributions from the 401(k) Plan unless over the age of 59½. Retirees cannot continue to take distributions from the 457 Plan upon return to work at a MPSERS employer no matter their age. If stopped, distributions can resume no sooner than 45 days after employment ends.
